A Tuesday morning traffic stop on Interstate 95 for a following too close infraction led to the discovery of 31 grams of marijuana and charges for a Snow Hill man.

Captain Chuck Hasty of the Northampton County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Dwayne Carter was on routine patrol around 11:30 a.m. when he reportedly observed a motor vehicle violation.

Carter stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver. He reportedly noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Carter ordered the occupants out of the vehicle and then conducted a search with assistance from Deputy Patrick Jacobs.

Results of the search included the discovery of the ounce of marijuana, scales, a grinder, plastic bags and a handgun.

Carter charged Fatar Dayshawn Weems, 21, with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was jailed on $33,000 bond and assigned a June 23 court date.

Lieutenant Bo Deloatch and Seaboard Police Chief George Reid assisted in the investigation.

According to Sheriff Jack Smith, “Interstate 95 is a main corridor of drugs on the Eastern Coast. People not only run drugs on the interstate they run money from illegal operations.”

Said the sheriff: “The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office is going to work with other agencies to try to put a dent in that illegal activity on the interstate. I want to commend our deputies on their alertness and getting drugs and guns off the street.”
