A Roanoke Rapids man is awaiting an August 13 court date after his arrest last month on cocaine-related charges.

Hershel Lee Grant, 47, of Maria Avenue, was arrested by Roanoke Rapids Police Officer Roy Ball after the officer reportedly noticed suspicious activity in the parking lot of the former Winn-Dixie shopping center off Tenth Street, his report notes.

The investigation into the case notes that 11.20 grams of powdered cocaine was seized, as well as a device for smoking marijuana, currency and cell phones.

“Mr. Grant has had several brushes with the law involving controlled substances,” Chief Thomas Hathaway said today. “It's a shame an individual like this continues to allegedly sell narcotics.”

Grant faces charges of maintaing a vehicle to keep a controlled substance; possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school. He also faces charges of sell and deliver schedule II; felony possession of schedule II and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was released on $40,000 bond while awaiting his court date.
