Children on Ransome Street in Roanoke Rapids are learning when life hands them lemons they can make money — and lemonade.

The lemonade stand at 927 Ransome Street, the location of Blessed Assurance Summer Camp, a daycare operated by Tammy Moseley for 12 years, is a project to raise money so the youngsters attending can buy an inflatable water slide.

It's also an effort, Moseley said, “So they can learn how to work for things.”

The lemonade stand opened Tuesday and so far business has been good, Moseley said. “The parents in the community have really come forward.”

The menu.

The first thought was to rent an inflatable water slide, but then the lemonade stand idea was born. “I thought it would be better for them to work towards the slide,” she said.

The children make the lemonade and parents have brought cupcakes. They are also selling slushies, chips and suckers.

“I think it's creative,” said Hannah Moseley, Tammy's daughter. “They've been learning how to make money for themselves. It shows them how to get their own money.”

Tammy said it also helped some of the children — who range in age from eight months to 5-years old — come out of their shyness shells.

“I like getting money,” said Brody Salmon. “Making money — it's my favorite part.”

Some people in the neighborhood have simply contributed money to the cause, Tammy said.

The inflatable water slide costs around $500. The hope is to get enough money to also buy a new bounce house, Tammy said.

Tammy believes the effort is helping the children. “I think so. It's helping them learn how to work for something.”

The lemonade stand will continue to operate through at least next week.
