An 18-year-old was the first to be arrested in a Wednesday afternoon murder on Gordon Drive, Roanoke Rapids police said this morning.

Rodney Jamall Joyner, 18, of Martha Road in Roanoke Rapids, was turned over to Roanoke Rapids police Sunday evening by the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, police Chief Andy Jackson said.

Jackson declined to say whether Joyner voluntarily surrendered and declined to discuss his alleged role in the slaying of 20-year-old Will Lee Shawn Cotton and the shooting of a still unidentified victim who remains in critical, but stable, condition.

Joyner had no comment Sunday evening as he was led to the police department for booking.

Joyner is led to the police station by Detective Bobby Martin.

He faces numerous charges and was jailed without the opportunity for bond.

Jackson said investigators charged him with with one count of first-degree murder, one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of felony conspiracy and one count of going armed to the terror of the public.

That he is charged with conspiracy means others are allegedly involved, but Jackson declined to say how many. “This is still an ongoing investigation. I can't discuss any details until the full extent of the investigation is wrapped up. It's a pretty extensive investigation.”

Cotton died of gunshot wounds to the head last week as he and the other victim were sitting in a car on Gordon Drive near the Oak Street intersection.

Jackson said Roanoke Rapids investigators are thankful for the help of the sheriff's office in the matter. “The sheriff's office has been a tremendous asset and help to us in the case.”
