Childers Childers Roanoke Rapids Police Department

A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Wednesday in a fraud case where the victim's card was used at several businesses.

The initial investigation that led to the arrest of Anthony Logan Childers, 23, was done by Roanoke Rapids Police Officer Ryan Cross, Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement.

Cross spoke with the victim at New Republic Savings Bank on Becker Drive where he learned their card was used at several businesses.

Cross contacted the businesses to review security footage and also contacted Investigator Bobby Martin.

The officer and detective identified Childers through the review. Martin arrested Childers around 2 p.m. after Cross began the initial investigation Wednesday around 9:30 a.m.

Martin said the victim had been missing the card for the past couple of days. There was no evidence to suggest it was taken during a time period when Childers had been reported missing by his parents earlier this month.

Martin charged Childers with obtaining property by false pretense and identity theft. He was given a $1,000 bond and an April 15 court date.

Investigator Jeff Davis assisted in the case.

Hasty attributed the arrest to the officers working together, along with the examination of the surveillance footage, which he said helped “in solving and closing this case with a quick arrest.”
