Henry Buchanan Moncure Sr.

“For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life" (Psalm 56:13)

Henry Buchanan Moncure, Sr., age 90, left his earthly home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 24, 2016.

He was born to Richard Cassius Lee Moncure, IV and Warren Sneed Moncure on January 22, 1926 in Stafford, VA.

One of eight children, Henry was the second youngest.
Henry graduated from Richmond Professional Institute (now known as Virginia Commonwealth University) and served in the US Navy before marrying his wife, Mildred Reese Hill, on December 27, 1952. Together, they raised 5 children. Henry was an entrepreneur who founded Moncure Homes, and served as a county commissioner for Northampton County for many years. He was a man of faith, a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church, who cared greatly for his family, his community, and his country.

His loves included being with family, being near the water (lake or river), and studying and educating others on Civil War history.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and one grandchild.

He is survived by his children Henry Buchanan Moncure, Jr of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Mildred Hill Moncure of Garysburg, NC, Fontaine Moncure Gibbons and her husband Billy of Chester, VA, Elizabeth Lewis Moncure and partner Vic Hague of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Philip Moncure and his wife Debbie of Roanoke Rapids, NC. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, 14 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as “Granddan.”
Visitation will be on Tuesday July 26 at Wrenn Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

A funeral will take place to celebrate his life on Wednesday July 27 at All Saints’ Episcopal Church at 11:00 am, with a graveside burial following at Aquia Episcopal Church in Stafford, VA at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made to the Civil War Trust, 1140 Professional Court, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
