Harold Edward Carawan

Harold Edward Carawan, 86, passed away after a lengthy illness on June 6, 2013, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He resided at 804 Monroe St in Roanoke Rapids and in Gasburg, Virginia.

Harold was born June 29, 1926 in Lowland, NC to the late Clinton Gold Carawan and Iva Campen Carawan. He moved to Roanoke Rapids as a young boy, attended the Roanoke Rapids schools, graduating with the class of 1944. Harold served in the United States Navy during World War II. Harold and his late wife, Aleane Myrick Carawan, were married for 58 years and were the owners of Harold’s Carpet Shop for 40 years. After retiring, Harold enjoyed life on the Carawan and Felts cattle farm in Gasburg, Virginia. His home on Lake Gaston was his sanctuary in recent years.

Harold served twice as president of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce and was recently honored as President Emeritus of the Roanoke River Basin Association where he actively served for many years.

Harold was a member of East Tenth Street Church of Christ for over 60 years where he served as a deacon, elder, Sunday School Teacher, choir member and chairman of the Missions and Benevolence Team.

In addition to his wife and parents, Harold was preceded in death by his sister, Harriet C. Johnson of Chesapeake; his brothers-in-law Wordest Felts of Greensboro, Walter Myrick of Goldsboro, Nick Seta of Hampton, New Hampshire, Tom Myrick and Cecil Arthur; and, his sisters-in-law Lilly Myrick of Wilmington and Della Myrick of Goldsboro. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Trudy C. Duke and her husband Bill, and his daughter Linda C. Merritt; his grandchildren, Jennifer D. Thompson and her husband Carl of Apex, Matthew Paige Merritt and Jeffrey Scott Merritt of Winterville; his brother Gold D. Carawan and his wife Myrt, his sisters Louella Arthur, Nancy Carawan of Chesapeake, and Beulah Carol Seta; sisters-in-law Betty Myrick Felts and Libby Myrick; brothers-in-law Howard Myrick and Paul Johnson; 17 nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.

A service celebrating Harold’s life will be held at 3 p.m on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at East Tenth Street Church of Christ in Roanoke Rapids. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 1:30 in the Clyde P. Wheeler Fellowship Building.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East Tenth Street Church of Christ Missions fund.
