John R. Whichard Jr.

John R. Whichard Jr., affectionately known as “Joey” to his family and friends, was born November 14, 1999, in Rocky Mount, NC.

Sadly he departed from us on August 8, 2018 at the young age of 18.

He had many interests and hobbies and loved being outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish and ride four-wheelers with his family.

He also played football for William R. Davie in middle School and Rocky Mount Preparatory in High School.

He was ambitious and wanted to start early on his work career, so at the age of 16, he pursued and obtained his GED from Halifax Community College.

Shortly after that he and his family moved to Myrtle Beach, SC. There he took up auto mechanics and carpentry. Then he found his real passion, landscaping. He loved his job and took great pride in his work.

Joey enjoyed making people laugh and was a bit of a prankster. He was kind, generous and loved his family. He will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his mother, Lisa Gibson, his stepfather, Forrest Mead, his sister, Leanne Whichard, his brother, William Mead, maternal grandparents, Ernest Gibson and Martha Thomason, paternal grandfather, Randy Whichard , several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, Monday August 20, 2018 at 6 p.m. with Pastor Randy Martin officiating.

Arrangements are by Askew Funeral and Cremation services in Roanoke Rapids.
