The Roanoke Rapids Varsity baseball team opens the 2015 season with a 6-4 conference road win at Warren County
RRHS started the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Dylan Allen doubled home Caleb Pratt from first base for a 1-0 lead.
Warren County responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Warren County scored another run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 4-1 lead.
RRHS clawed back with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning when Dylan Allen hit another double to score Cameron Rogerson and Nick Horvath. The two runs got the Yellow Jackets within one run at 4-3.
RRHS regained the lead for good with 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Cameron Rogerson singled to score both Josh Elias and Hunter Whitmire. Rogerson then came home on Nick Horvath's RBI double. The runs gave RRHS a 6-4 lead and that would be how the game finished.
Nick Horvath picked up the win on the mound for the Jackets. He pitched 4 innings giving up 4 runs, 2 earned, on 2 hits while striking out 9 batters. Caleb Pratt got the save by pitching 2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and striking out 8 batters.
Head coach Mark Snead comments, "This was a good game to start the season. Nick really settled in after the 1st inning and pitched a great game. Caleb came in behind Nick and stuck out 8 of the 10 batters he faced. The two combined for 17 strikeouts while giving up only 2 hits. I am very pleased with how they pitched. Our defense played error free ball behind them and that is very impressive for the first game of the season. Our team really played well after getting down early. They fought hard and worked together to claw back in the game and earn the W. I like the makeup of this team so far."
RRHS is now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Carolina Conference.
The next game for the Yellow Jackets will be on Wednesday March 11 with their home opener against Southern Nash High School. Game time is set for 5pm.
