On Thursday, a federal jury in Newport News convicted co-defendant Jayveon Christopher McCloud of conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery, threats, and violence; interference with interstate commerce by robbery, threats, and violence; carjacking; and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. McCloud also faces a mandatory minimum of seven years and up to life in prison when sentenced on January 20.
According to court records and evidence presented at trial, McCloud and Fields—each armed with a handgun and wearing a mask—approached a delivery driver in Newport News. They pointed firearms at the victim and ordered him to drop his belongings, empty his pockets, and remove his shoes. The pair stole the victim’s shoes, cash, food order, and car key fob.
McCloud fled in the victim’s vehicle, while Fields drove away in a car stolen from his mother.
Shortly after the victim reported the robbery, Newport News Police spotted the victim’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. McCloud attempted to flee, crashed the car, and was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.
The following day, Henrico County Police located Fields driving at high speeds. Fields crashed into a convenience store parking lot and ran toward a wooded area before officers apprehended him nearby.
Actual sentences will be determined by a federal district court judge after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
