Ten teams battled it out on the softball field Saturday raising money to honor the late coach Mike Newsome.

Five men's & five women's teams entered the 1st annual Team Mike Newsome adult softball tournament. This event was organized, first to honor the late coach Mike Newsome, second to help raise funds for a 35ft flagpole in his honor at Newsome fields at Chockeyotte Park in Roanoke Rapids, not as a professional event.

I would like to thank the five men's teams who entered the event: Reapers, Legit 2, State line Outlaws, County Line Bombers, P-town. Also I would like to thank the five women's teams who entered: Oscars, Pitch Slappers, Scott's Flooring, Hudson Motorsports, Legit. A big thanks to all the staff who helped: Ellen Mullins, Linda Ruble, Allison Ruble, Taylor Lee, Eddie Rubble, Kelly Williams, Marshania Barnes, Kay Wray, Torey Vincent, Tim Bridges, Frank Griffin. The following Business: TD Sports, Discount Tire of Roanoke Rapids, Clary's Speedway, 1800Flagpole.com, Northampton County Wellness Center & Lynch's Signs & Graphics.

The Northampton County Wellness Center in Jackson and Recreation Director James Roberts was also a very part of this event. The use of their softball/baseball complex and use of three fields at one time helped stepped up things.

Team Legit 2 won the men's division and Hudson Motorsports won the women's division championships.

Things are looking good on the 35ft flagpole to honor coach Newsome. It has been ordered and should arrive soon, then work will be done to install and have a dedication.

Thanks to all the supporters to coach Mike Newsome. The outcry of help, just confirms that coach meant a lot to everyone.
