The Roanoke Rapids High School golf team competed in the 2A Mideast State Regional on Monday at Caswell Pines Golf Club in Yanceyville.
The Jackets finished in 3rd place behind Reidsville and Clinton. The 3rd place finish qualified the Jackets for the 2A State Championship meet!
Jackson Gowen paced the Jackets winning the individual regional title, firing a 3 over-par, 75. Spenser Hargrove, Thomas Merritt, and Hunter Clifton rounded out the scoring for the Jackets with a 88, 89, and 90, respectively.
Head golf coach Tim Stark stated, "I'm incredibly happy for Jackson. He's got an outstanding work ethic and has been waiting all year for a breakout round. We've been waiting for it to click for him all season and it happened in dramatic fashion on the back 9 yesterday. He was in a zone that golfers will know you may only experience a couple times in your life. He had 4 straight birdies to open up the back 9 and held it together to shoot a 3-under-par 33 on the back."
"We had two team goals this year: win the conference and qualify for state as a team. We've accomplished both and I'm very proud of the guys for putting in the work to achieve these. This whole team has learned how to grind it out when they're not playing well, and that makes them wise beyond their years in golf," coach Stark added.
The Jackets will travel to Whispering Pines Country Club to compete in the 2A state championship next Monday and Tuesday.
