The RRHS Varsity Baseball team finished 3-0 at the Ray Avery Easter Tournament at Ayden-Grifton High School by defeating Bear Grass Charter by a score of 12-0.
Colby Warren pitched the complete game shutout. He only allowed one hit while striking out 5 batters.
The Yellow Jackets offense pounded out 15 hits on the day. Every starter had at least one hit.
Head coach Mark Snead stated, "As I told the guys yesterday, if you keep hitting the ball hard the hits will come. And boy did they come today. We did a great job in all phases of the game today. We pitched well, fielded well, and hit well. This was a great game for our team. I am so happy for them. "
With only six teams in the tournament, this was not an elimination format. So both RRHS and host Ayden-Grifton finished 3-0. So the tie breaker of fewest runs allowed was used to determine the champion. The Yellow Jackets only allowed 6 runs, but unfortunately Ayden-Grifton only allowed 4 runs. So Ayden-Grifton was declared the champions with RRHS finishing second.
Coach Snead stated, "I am a little disappointed that we aren't the champions, but I know how well we played in this tournament. All 18 of our guys played a strong role in our 3-0 finish. They should all be proud of what they accomplished. We faced some really good teams and went undefeated against them. Now we need to carry this strong play over to the rest of our season."
With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 9-2 on the season. RRHS will return to Doyle Field next Tuesday against the NC School of Science and Math. Game time is set for 6 pm.
