Clary's Speedway, the 3/10 mile oval dirt track located in Brinkleyville was invaded Tuesday by teenagers.
Well two upcoming Sportsman division dirt track racing teenagers from Mechanicsville Virginia that is.
The two first time racing on dirt drivers came to Clary's Tuesday to get some seat time and feel their cars out. In car #11, thirteen year old Chase Butler and in car #71, sixteen year old Savannah Nickens.
Both Butler and Nickens raced the arena Racing USA series this past year. arena Racing racecars are half-scale stock cars racing around a $500,000.00 high-banked race track inside the Richmond Coliseum. The cars circle the hockey rink sized track at speeds nearing 50-mph – in less than 8 seconds.
Butler who is moving to High school next year and his father met Matt Ashworth, from Ashworth Brothers Racing, and Chase decided he wanted to race like Matt. Chase's will be Matt Ashworth's teammate at Virginia Motor speedway this season and Matt will be helping Chase all he can.
Savannah Nickens who is 16 decided to follow her dad and go dirt tracking. Savannah was set to make her Sportsman Division debute on May 14th at Virginia Motor Speedway, but mother Nature and the rain had other plans.
The VMS Sportsman Division rules makes both their cars not fit into any of Clary's division, buy Clary's promoter Buddy Isles Sr. has offered if they can get six drivers and sportsman cars he will race that division. So be on the lookout for Friday Double down nights and you might see these two teenagers on the track hunting down the top spot.
