The Halifax Community College (HCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa provided some much-needed supplies, and a large dose of holiday cheer, to the residents at the Northampton County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
On December 6, members of the international honors society loaded up and took all of the donations they had been collecting since November. Items included lotion, mouthwash, crossword puzzles, and even stuffed animals.
The donation drive was part of PTK’s commitment to serving the community.
In addition to the donations, the PTK students and their advisors, Gary Redding and Dr. Rachel Stephens, also led the residents in “reminiscence therapy.” This type of therapy helps individuals, especially those with dementia, by incorporating all senses as they try to remember times from the past. By utilizing sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste, the residents were better able to connect with the past – and reconnect with the present.
