As concern about the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to grow, Halifax Community College (HCC) is implementing strategies focused on mitigating risk and ensuring the safety of students, faculty and staff.

“It is imperative to the administration that the safety of our students, and our staff, be at the forefront of our decision making,” said Dr. Michael Elam, president of HCC. “To that end, we are implementing some strategies that will make our campus safer during this challenging time.”

First and foremost, Elam was adamant that the College continue to operate, without interruption, in providing all classes. Currently, HCC is following normal operating procedures with regards to being open and providing instruction.

Certain strategies were implemented, however, that hopefully will prevent an outbreak on campus.

First, all travel is restricted to local travel only. This means only travel within HCC’s service area will be permitted.

Also, all events expecting more than 100 participants have been postponed or canceled. This includes the following events:

  • Presidential Lecture Series scheduled for March 16
  • TRiO College Expo scheduled for March 19
  • Progressive Community Awards dinner scheduled for March 26
  • Men-to-Men Summit scheduled for April 8
  • HCC Foundation Job Fair scheduled for April 9
  • Presidential Lecture Series scheduled for April 14

In addition, in a fortuitous moment of leadership, the HCC administration and board of trustees approved a telecommuting policy for HCC staff during the February board meeting. With that policy in place, staff members can work from home if necessary, allowing the College to remain operational as the situation continues to unfold.

“At this time, we do not have any known cases on campus, and we are continuing to operate under normal procedures,” Elam said. “However, as administrators, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the College is prepared for any situation that may arise in the coming days and weeks.”
