Halifax Community College reminds currently enrolled HCC students that free academic support is available throughout the semester through the College’s Center for Academic Excellence, located in Room 149 of the Library Building.
The Center for Academic Excellence offers convenient tutoring options designed to strengthen academic skills, build confidence, and help Halifax Community College’s students succeed in the classroom.
Whether a student needs assistance preparing for an exam, completing a writing assignment, conducting research, or better understanding course material, support is available at no cost.
Students can use three tutoring options through the Center for Academic Excellence.
In-Person Tutoring
Students can receive in-person tutoring in Room 149 of the Library Building. Tutoring is available in all academic areas with a faculty referral.
The Center for Academic Excellence is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
Hours of operation may vary during student breaks, holidays, inclement weather, and registration.
Peer Study Sessions
The Center for Academic Excellence also coordinates peer study sessions, giving students enrolled in the same course an opportunity to study, collaborate, and strengthen their understanding of course material together. Students interested in participating in a peer study session can contact the Center for Academic Excellence to make arrangements.
Tutor.com
For students who need assistance outside of regular campus hours, Tutor.com provides free, 24-hour access to individual virtual tutoring. Tutor.com is embedded directly in every Blackboard (and Canvas after the Learning Management System transition) course and lets students connect with a tutor on demand using chat, voice, and an interactive whiteboard.
The College is encouraging students to become familiar with these resources now, particularly as midterms for 16-week courses approach on Monday, October 19, 2026. Seeking assistance early can help students address academic challenges before they become obstacles to their success.
“Our goal at the Center for Academic Excellence is to make sure students know they have support available throughout their academic journey,” said Chelsea Thompson, Director of the Learning Resource Center. “Whether they need help understanding course material, preparing for an exam, strengthening their writing, or simply finding a productive way to study, we want students to take advantage of these free resources and know that they do not have to navigate academic challenges alone.”
Students can also join HCC’s academic support network. Those interested in serving as peer tutors are encouraged to contact the Center for Academic Excellence for information about applying.
