Grass carp introduced into Lake Gaston

Lake Gaston has some new residents as of Tuesday morning.
Approximately 7,350 grass carp were stocked in the lake early Tuesday morning, 50 percent at Granite Hall Shores and 25 percent each at Songbird and Big Stonehouse creeks.

High speed rail hearing set in Norlina

A public hearing on the Southeast High Speed Rail (SEHSR) is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13 at Northside Elementary School, located off Hwy. 1 just outside the Norlina town limits.
Similar hearings are scheduled in July for Vance, Franklin and Wake counties in North Carolina, as well as counties in Virginia along the SEHSR route. Hearings have been scheduled with the completion of a draft environmental impact statement related to the project.

State adopts national text curriculum

North Carolina has become one of the first states officially to adopt a newly developed set of national curriculum standards for use in the state’s public schools. When fully implemented, the “Common Core State Standards” will guide the development of everything from teachers’ lesson plans to final exams, and make it easier to compare North Carolina’s progress in education to that of other states.
