The Center for Energy Education will welcome the community to Light the Night on Wednesday, September 30 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at its 460 Airport Road campus.
The event will feature C4EE’s Clean Power Avenue of Flags and is free and open to the public. Organizers are planning a silent disco, free food, student performances, games, and glow-in-the-dark activities for visitors of all ages.
Light the Night serves as the evening kickoff for EnergyFEST 2026: The Future Is Fully Charged, which will take place the next day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at C4EE. The two events give the community an opportunity to gather, learn, and explore how clean energy is shaping rural communities.
"Light the Night brings families and neighbors together in a fun and engaging setting that makes clean energy welcoming and easy to explore," said Mozine Lowe, executive director of C4EE. “By sharing the story of our Clean Power Avenue of Flags, we show visitors that rural communities have an important place in the clean-energy future and begin a conversation that will continue at EnergyFEST.”
Halifax County became the first U.S. community to host the Clean Power campaign in 2022, when 21 flags lined C4EE's campus entrance.
Clean Power founder Oliver Wayman and British artist Morag Myerscough created the designs to encourage public conversation about renewable energy and a lower-carbon future. The flags feature bright colors and words including sun, sea, and air. They are made from yarn produced from recycled ocean plastic.
Before reaching Halifax County, the Clean Power campaign appeared on major international stages. It was previewed at Art Basel in Switzerland in September 2021, followed by an installation of 50 flags along the promenade leading to the United Nations climate conference COP26 in Glasgow that November. In August 2022, more than 100 flags stretched across London's Oxford Street.
“At C4EE, the flags provide a colorful entry point to education about renewable energy and the role rural communities can play in the clean energy transition,” the center said. “Light the Night will invite visitors to experience the installation after dark while enjoying an evening of fun designed for the entire community.”
