Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:

Man waives counsel on cocaine, other charges

A man charged Tuesday night on cocaine and other charges elected to represent himself at future proceedings, according to eCourts documents.

Kashun Holiday, 27, of Roanoke Rapids, signed a waiver this morning during his first appearance of his right to have legal assistance, according to one document.

His initial bond was also modified to $15,000 secured, according to another document filed in the electronic court record.

Holiday was stopped Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. by Corporal J. Velez and Deputy I. MIller during a saturation patrol in the area of Highway 158 and Dickens Avenue, according to Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. He was stopped for a motor vehicle violation near Brigman street.

Deputies could smell a strong odor of marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and 20.2 grams of cocaine, 26.1 grams of marijuana, one stolen firearm and multiple items of drug paraphernalia were seized.

Holiday was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession of cocaine, possession of a stolen firearm, felony carrying a concealed gun, felony maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, possess drug paraphernalia and directional signals equipment violation. 

Holiday was also served with an outstanding order for arrest for felony carrying a concealed gun.

He has a May 22 district court date following his first appearance today and remains in the Halifax County Detention Center as of this report.

Cocaine charge

On Tuesday shortly around 11 p.m. Lieutenant R. Elder stopped a vehicle for a motor vehicle violation in the 9000 block of Highway 48.

Ronald Smiley Jr., 50, of Roanoke Rapids was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Smiley gave consent to search the vehicle and cocaine and drug paraphernalia were located.

Smiley was arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked.

During his first appearance this morning he was assigned a public defender and his bond was modified to $1,500 secured, according to eCourts records, and is no longer listed in detention center records.

He has a May 22 district court date after his first appearance today.

RRPD seeks assistance

Lieutenant Morgan Worrell reported that on April 23 the Roanoke Rapids Police Department received information about several financial cards that had been stolen and then used at multiple locations throughout the city. 

Police are requesting assistance to identify the alleged suspect.
