Two people with gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital by private vehicles Tuesday afternoon — one was released after treatment for minor injuries, and the other remains in stable condition.

Investigation into the case began after Weldon Police Chief Christopher Davis said he received a call shortly after 2:45 p.m. about a large fight near East Sixth and Cedar streets involving approximately 50 to 100 people.

While going to the scene, Davis said he received another call from the 911 center saying someone had been shot.

There was no fight at the site the caller had referenced, but Davis learned that the shooting occurred near the 700 block of Cedar Street. No one at that location was cooperative.

Police did learn that two people were taken to ECU Health North Hospital.

The Weldon Police Department is working diligently to identify the shooter — or shooters — at this time. Davis said the matter appears to be an isolated incident.

Lieutenant L. Melton, Sergeant I. Smith, and Corporal A. Dickens assisted along with members of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

“I would like to thank the quick response and assistance from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office with this incident,” Davis said. “They were extremely helpful at the crime scene.”
