A Gaston police officer was charged Wednesday with one count of statutory rape.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that the agency received a request to investigate allegations against Roderick Lamar Howard, who, according to eCourts records, listed a Vance Street address in Roanoke Rapids.

According to the arrest warrant, Howard, 34, is alleged to have carnally known a child under the age of 13. The offense date in the warrant was January 1, 2018.

Howard is currently in the Halifax County Detention Center awaiting a February 26 district court date. He was jailed without the opportunity for bond.
