The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell Harris:

Traffic stop leads to cocaine arrest

On Friday shortly after 7 p.m., Deputy D. Bybee initiated a traffic stop on Davie Smith Street near Branch Avenue. The driver, identified as Jermaine Bowser, 47, of Roanoke Rapids, was found to be driving with a license suspended for a prior DWI and had an outstanding arrest warrant from Edgecombe County.

During the stop, a Roanoke Rapids Police Department dog alerted deputies to the presence of drugs. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed cocaine along with drug paraphernalia.

Charges: Possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while license revoked.

Bond status: Bowser received no bond for the local charges — March 25 court date — and a $1,000 bond for the Edgecombe County warrant — April 2 court date.

Weldon man arrested with gun and drugs

On Thursday Sergeant N. Estes and Deputy H. Barnes were patrolling the Beech Court area of Weldon in an attempt to locate a wanted individual. 

Deputies successfully located Denzel Cornelius Ashe, 26, of Weldon, inside a vehicle. Ashe was wanted on an outstanding Halifax County order for arrest and a domestic violence protective order.

During the encounter, deputies discovered a concealed firearm between the driver’s seat and the door. A search of Ashe’s person also yielded a folded dollar bill containing cocaine.

Charges: Felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and carrying a concealed weapon.

Bond Status: Ashe was served with the DVPO and the warrant; he received no bond and has a court date set for March 26.
