The second-largest prize in North Carolina lottery history was won by a Halifax County man on a ticket sold at a store in Roanoke Rapids, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.
The $209.3 million Powerball jackpot was won on a ticket purchased at the West 10th Street Mart on January 21.
Out of respect for the winner’s privacy, rrspin.com has chosen not to publish the winner’s name.
The winner bought a $2 Powerball ticket and opted to remain anonymous for 90 days. Under state law, when a player in North Carolina wins a prize of $50 million or more, they can choose to keep their identity confidential for up to 90 days after claiming the prize.
The retailer received a $50,000 bonus incentive for selling the winning jackpot ticket.
When the winner arrived on January 22 to claim the prize, they chose the lump sum payment of $95.3 million. After the required federal and state tax withholdings, the winner took home $68.6 million.
