Breaking a household smoking policy angered the wife of a Roanoke Rapids man who allegedly beat him with a broom and stabbed him with scissors Thursday afternoon.

Dayshon Garner, 24, went to the bathroom of his house on Thomas Jefferson Drive off Highway 48 to smoke a cigar and his wife became irate, Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sandy Johnson Garner, 28, banged on the bathroom door to get Mr. Garner to open it and eventually kicked the door open.

She allegedly physically assaulted her husband and used a broom to hit him and then allegedly stabbed him with a pair of scissors, Temple said.

Investigation by deputies Josh Clark and Robert Wade shows Mr. Garner sustained defensive wounds to his back, including three cuts from the scissors. His injuries were not life threatening.

Mrs. Garner was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and communicating threats.

Under state domestic violence laws she was jailed without bond.

Temple said it is not clear why Mr. Garner didn’t go outside to smoke.
