An alert neighbor helped Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies catch two men who allegedly stole scrap metal from behind AMVETS Post 101 Friday.

Lieutenant Chuck Hasty said Deputy Harold Phillips responded to a call where an alert neighbor in the area saw two people loading scrap metal. The neighbor got a good description of the people and the direction they headed after loading the truck.

Phillips and Deputy Herbert Williams were in the area and spotted the truck before the call was dispatched, Hasty said.

When the larceny call was received Phillips spoke with the victim while Williams searched for the vehicle and with help from Warren County deputies found it.

Lee Owen Vandeventer, 19, and Daniel Hunter Floyd, 17, both of Roanoke Rapids, were arrested and charged with larceny, possession of stolen goods and conspiracy to commit larceny.

They were given $3,000 bonds and have December 29 court dates.

“I give a big thank you to all citizens that look out for their neighbors,” Hasty said. “This type of action makes our job a lot easier.”
