Becker Village and The Musicians Artists Network have teamed up to provide another outlet for area musicians to perform.

Crooked Head performs at 6 p.m.

Friday the mall and MAN present another in a series of free concerts featuring Crooked Head, a duet with Matt Chambers and Mike Williams who perform original songs.

“They needed a place to showcase their talent,” said mall owner Ellen Heaton. “For us, it's a good time for people who haven't been to the mall to see the new businesses and new things happening. It's a place for people who may not be exposed to the musical talent in the area. I think it's a cool idea.”

Heaton believes the monthly concert series, along with other places in the area to catch live music, dispel notions there is nothing to do. “To me it's a great place to live,” she said, explaining attractions like Sylvan Heights, the canal trail and museum. “You've got a group of people who want to showcase their talent and art. It helps them get exposure. We have so much talent and so many diverse people doing many diverse things.”

Ann Meadows, executive director of MAN, said the live concert series is another extension of what the newly formed organization wants to do, let people know about the musicians and artists who are in the area.

In deciding to do the concert series, Meadows said she wanted something that wouldn't compete with, but would add to events like Friday in Park and the Acoustic Jam at the Roanoke River Mill in Weldon.

“It's an absolutely great opportunity,” Meadows said. “We've got some musicians who play for money, but we've got a lot of people who are really good who just play in front of family and don't get out. I think it's a great thing.”

Meadows said she is is appreciative of the help Heaton has offered MAN. “She's helping The MAN to showcase the talent. I think it's a win-win for everybody.”

Meadows is currently working on a database of area musicians for the organization's website, which will list musicians by specialty, style and instrument. “If someone needed a a sax player they could look in that listing and click on an individual person's bio.”

The second Friday concert series at the mall begins at 6 p.m.
