When the going gets tough, Herman and Ruth Moseley get going.
Since becoming part of Disaster Immediate Response Team in 2007 they have traveled the country to its disaster sites to feed the storm battered and bruised.
Sunday and today they had their RV and the DIRT trailer at ProBuild cooking for relief workers and then for those suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.
Ruth said they have traveled from Florida to Iowa to Arkansas.
“Herman was always a helpful person,” she said this morning. “We knew we wanted to get an RV and travel. God spoke to him and said help with disasters.”
Mike Clark, who cooks for different charitable causes in the area, was helping the Moseley's today. Piggly-Wiggly donated meat that would have otherwise gone to waste, Clark said. Daughtridge Gas and others also contributed to the effort.
“They're good Samaritans, that's what it amounts to,” Roanoke Rapids City Councilwoman Suetta Scarbrough, who was helping, said of the Moseley's.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, during the floods, may have been the worst disaster Herman said they have been to. “Some of the comments they make bring a tear to your eye. One lady looked me straight in the eye and said, 'Thank God for what y'all are doing.'”
No sooner had Moseley told that story than a woman seeking food came up and told them, “I thank God for y'all, I really do.”
The charity doesn't just extend to disaster events. They help with other events.
Mack Taylor knows this firsthand. The victim of a home invasion in Gaston which has yet to be solved, the Mosely's cooked for him to help defray medical expenses and help him recoup other losses during the burglary. “It's meant everything in the world to me,” he said, while helping Herman and Clark.
Clark said it is natural to help in these situations. “Working together, that's what makes it rewarding.”
The Moseley's spent five hours to get back to Roanoke Rapids so they could begin cooking and with help from fundraisers and charitable donations, they will be on the road again when disaster strikes. Again, Ruth said. “Wherever we're able to get to.”
