The sheriff's office continues to look for 29-year-old Herman Lee Edwards of Roanoke Rapids, for a whom a murder warrant has been filed. “It is a priority for the Sheriff’s Office to capture Herman Edwards before someone else gets hurt,” Captain Jay Burch said in a press release. “I ask for the assistance of the citizens of Halifax County to assist us in finding Mr. Edwards. “

Burch said the public is advised not to approach Edwards, who is considered armed and dangerous. “The Sheriff’s Office asks that if anyone knows the whereabouts of Herman Lee Edwards that they call their local authorities or crime stoppers at (252) 583-4444.”

The people arrested and the one sought allegedly entered the house and fired one shot, which struck Peterson, 29, in the upper torso. The sheriff's office has declined to say what kind of weapon was used and said investigators are still trying to develop a motive in the killing. Other people were in the house in the 1000 block of Maple Street Extension when the shooting occurred but were not harmed.

The sheriff's office received a report of a person being shot around 11:45 p.m. Sergeant Greg Richardson and Deputy Travis Clark arrived and discovered Peterson had been shot and later died at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
