While Steve Owens took the honor, he credited others who helped him earn it.
Owens was recognized Monday night as First Carolina Agency's Unsung Hero of the Year, a year celebration of people who work to help the community, often out of view of the spotlight.
Owens holds benefit dances at the American Legion post, benefitting both the legion and Angel's Closet.
He was one of 52 nominees who are honored throughout the week by the insurance business on Roanoke Avenue through nominations by people in the community.
The highlight of the year is the announcement of the Unsung Hero of the Year.
The dances have raised $6,000 for Angel's Closet, helping the charity meet expenses, give scholarships and caps and gowns, said Heather Etheridge, who filled in for her father, Phil Hux, owner of the agency.
Owens, a musician and landscaper, received a $1,000 check for the award, which must be given to a charitable organization. Owens has decided to split his between Angel's Closet and the Halifax County Boy's and Girl's Club, which will receive help from a February 24 dance.
Owens declined to take full credit for being this year's winner. He credited people like fellow nominee Ashleigh Roberson and others instrumental in helping him like Steve Evans, Sarah Grizzard Thompson and Collette Fox. “There were many people who helped sell tickets. It takes volunteers.”
State Representative Michael Wray, an owner in First Carolina, praised all the nominees, for instance Piggly-Wiggly, which donated its meats in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene to DIRT Ministries, which was able to feed 3,000 from the donation. “The best thing about life is giving back to other people.”
