Some 35,000 pounds of frozen chicken leg quarters were cleaned from Interstate 95 this morning after the driver of the rig hauling them apparently fell asleep at the wheel and overturned the vehicle.
The driver walked away from the wreck unharmed but will be cited for careless and reckless driving and failing to maintain lane control, according to Trooper M.D. Adair of the state Highway Patrol.
The wreck occurred in the northbound lane of the interstate shortly after 4:45 this morning at the 151 mile marker near the weigh station.
The crash blocked one lane of the interstate for about five hours as Eastern Environmental of Rocky Mount was dispatched to clean up the leg quarters, which were in wax lined boxes and ice packed, and take them to a landfill. Any food items involved in a crash are required to be destroyed, Adair said.
The Werner Enterprises Peterbilt rig, which was totaled, was heading to a Perdue plant in Dover, Delaware.
