With a trial date tentatively set for April 30, Antwaan Clanton’s court proceedings will center on charges associated with second-degree rape instead of first-degree rape, court officials confirmed.

Clanton is currently in prison serving a 28-year to 35-year stint in Raleigh’s Central Prison after he was sentenced as a habitual felon in October.

Now Clanton awaits trial for a July rape that allegedly occurred on the campus of Halifax Regional Medical Center.

According to the court calendar he is scheduled to appear April 30 on several charges: Felony second-degree rape, felony second-degree sex offense and felony second-degree kidnapping. Also set on the calendar are charges related to breaking and entering.

Court officials confirmed Clanton was indicted on the second-degree sex offense charges instead of charges related to first-degree sex offense.

Law enforcement sources say that he was indicted on second-degree sex offense charges is an indication the Grand Jury, which heard the case in September, didn’t feel the bruising on the victim’s neck was enough for a first-degree indictment.
