The problem with the taste and smell of drinking water from the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District appears to be solved — for now.

“We think some of the stuff we did was effective,” district CEO Dan Brown said today. “We rebuilt filters, went down and cleaned storage tanks.”

The district also addressed oxidation in the settling basin. “I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. We are carefully monitoring and took samples because we want to look for algae. We’re cautiously optimistic.”

Brown said last month the best guess was it was in the water coming from Roanoke Rapids Lake and possibly related to the effects a dry and unseasonably warm winter has had on the source.
