The Roanoke Valley Farmers Market will have a Monday location in Roanoke Rapids beginning June 18.

The market will be located on the plaza of the Kirkwood Adams Community Center and will be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Main Street Director Lance Jenkins said Tuesday.

The Kirkwood market will open with what Jenkins describes as five unique vendors and there will be live music.

Talks about opening a second farmers market began last spring. Discussions continued and with advice from the city’s Planning Department and an ultimate nod from the planning board and city council the stage was set.

“The city worked very well with us,” Jenkins said. “(Interim City Manager) Ed Wyatt was extremely supportive.”

Jenkins believes having the farmers market in the city once a week not only helps the Roanoke Avenue Business Alliance but the Halifax County Cooperative Extension Service. “It’s going to help bring people here. When people see vitality, that’s an advantage to us. For the city it’s a public service.”

Jenkins said it wasn’t feasible for the cooperative extension service to add another day at its location on Highway 158.

While the extension service will handle the operation as it does on Highway 158, the business alliance will help book acts and put out signage to lead people to the community center. “We’re just going to help with promotion and try to bring more people into the district.”
