The Roanoke Avenue Business Alliance has completed its Main Street report and Manager Sherry Hux gave members an overview at the organization’s monthly luncheon this afternoon.

“We are doing very well,” she said, “We’ve had a lot of successes.”

Hux said there have been 14 façade improvements and 34 percent of all business permits issued in the city were issued in the business district. “We’ve had very positive numbers.”

One of the big upcoming events is the Amazing Race set for September 15. The event is being held in conjunction with Key Fitness.

Darren Harris, director of Key Fitness, said 30 participants have registered thus far for the event, a race with obstacles and clues to collect about the history of Roanoke Avenue.

Harris said he hopes the race, which will cover four blocks of the city and is geared for all ages, will become a yearly event.

“I like this event,” Hux said, “And that you can make it a fun, family activity.”

For more information on the event call Key Fitness at 252-537-5639.

Meanwhile, with the success of the toast of Gilbert Portela, Hux said RABA is seeking suggestions from the community for toast and roast subjects.

Hux also said within the next couple of weeks the works of local artist Napoleon Hill will be featured on the now covered windows of the building at 201 Roanoke Avenue and the Freid’s building. The artwork will depict scenes of what the buildings were originally used for. The project is being done in conjunction with the Halifax County Arts Council, which received a grant for the project.

The works will be displayed in the old McCrory’s building before going on the windows of the buildings.
