A family on Highway 48 in the Roanoke Rapids area reported to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Saturday that their dog, Madea, was stolen.

Major Bruce Temple said there is no evidence to suggest the dog, a pit bull, was stolen for baiting or fighting. “We know in times past that has occurred.”

The sheriff’s office has had reports of other pit bulls being stolen. In fact, Temple said, it is the most popular breed to steal. “Pit bulls cost money. They have a monetary value.”

Temple said the sheriff’s office hopes if Madea is given as a gift the dog will be recognized as stolen. “We hope someone on the receiving end will realize it’s not their dog.”

Temple said the dog is friendly and will come if called by her name. Temple said it is evident the five-month-old dog was stolen because the chain it was on was also stolen.
