Roanoke Rapids police are investigating an incident that may involve someone impersonating an officer who uses blue lights in the car.
On March 27 shortly after 10:30 p.m. a 31-year-old woman was stopped at Hinson and South Monroe Street by a man driving a white car with stripes down the side and a circle in the center with the possible wording ‘State Patrol’ on the left side. The car had small tires and big rims.
The person getting out of the car with interior blue lights was described as a light-skinned man, possibly Native American, with a buzz haircut. He wore a black long-sleeved shirt and gray pants with a dark stripe down the side and appeared to be older than 30.
The man stepped out of the car and asked the woman for her license and registration and then went back to his car. He came back and told the woman her car came back as stolen.
Other vehicles passed the scene and the man told the woman to leave.
Police checked with the Halifax County 911 Center and determined no traffic stops were conducted in that area by law enforcement.
Motorists have the right, police said, to continue traveling if they feel unsafe when an unmarked is trying to pull them over.
Police recommend reducing speed, turning hazard and interior lights on and calling 911 to report you are being stopped. Continue to drive until you find a well-lit area, preferably where people are around. The dispatcher can make a legitimate law enforcement officer aware you are looking for a safe area to pull over.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
