Andrea Mason always wanted to have her own salon.

This week that dream became true as she took over the former Melody’s studio after its namesake left to run the Tall Tales barber shop on the same 10th Street block.

Mason named her business Hair’s a Hoot Family Hair Care after seeing a photo of an owl while searching for possible names.

A stylist for five and a half years, Mason said hair care runs in her family.

Mason was offered a chance to work at the barbershop but saw the change as an opportunity to open her own business and keep the clients she built up over nearly six years.

The experience she gained while working with Melody St. Clair was a big help, she said. “Melody taught me how to do barber cuts. I really enjoyed it. We didn’t learn how to do that in cosmetology school.”

The business is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday is appointment only and she is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The extended hours, Mason said, “Give people a chance to come in when they get off work so they don’t have to rush.”

The shop does all hairstyles — men, women and children — Mason said, including highlights, color and layers. “Whatever they tell me I do it.”

Bryan Mason, Andrea’s father-in-law, was one of several customers waiting on opening day. “I like the way it lays on my head,” he said. “She’s been cutting my hair before she was my daughter-in-law.”

Mason will have part-time help from Michelle Sanderford.

She hopes her first business venture will lead to bigger things. “I’m so excited. Maybe one day I can open a bigger place. I want to go big one day.”
