A Roanoke Rapids man has been federally indicted for allegedly selling crack cocaine.

A federal grand jury on March 26 returned a true bill of indictment against Robert Champion for unlawful possession with intent to distribute more than 28 grams of cocaine base, according to a copy of the document filed in the federal court system.

The indictment says the alleged offense occurred on or about January 4, 2011.

During that time Champion was a constant target of law enforcement in both Roanoke Rapids and Weldon.

An order for arrest was issued the same day of the indictment and Champion was appointed a federal public defender on April 26, according to court records.

Champion was allowed release from federal detention following a May 1 hearing.

Terms of his release include no violation of federal, state or local laws, including motor vehicle violations. He must cooperate in the collection of a DNA sample if so ordered and must advise the court of any address or telephone change.

He must appear in court when scheduled and must surrender to any sentence imposed.

A pretrial conference is scheduled on or before May 10 and motions are to be filed no later than May 24. Responses are to be filed no later than June 10, according to court records.
