A man charged with allegedly shooting his friend and then wrecking while taking him to the hospital also faces charges from the state Highway Patrol.

Trooper T.D. “Bo” Forsht charged Clarence M. Bailey Jr. with DWI, careless and reckless driving and no insurance.

According to the trooper’s report, Bailey, on the evening of May 18, was driving east near the intersection of Roper Springs and Justice Branch roads as he carried the victim to the hospital.

He ran off the road to the right, collided with a ditch, a group of trees and then a fallen tree before the vehicle came to an uncontrolled rest.

Both Bailey and the victim were hospitalized.

Detective O.B. Wiltsie of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office charged Bailey Wednesday with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

The shooting occurred inside the town of Littleton but the sheriff’s office took over investigation of the case at the request of the town’s police department.

Wiltsie said Wednesday night Bailey allegedly shot the victim in the leg after the two had been drinking and words were exchanged.
