A Sunday morning traffic stop on Country Club Road netted a revolver that was reportedly in the possession of a convicted felon.
The stop came as Agent D.C. Dickens of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office was following up on drug complaints on Ransome Circle in Scoco Park, Lieutenant Anzell Harris said.
Dickens noticed a car leaving Ransome Circle and reportedly observed a motor vehicle violation on Country Club Road near the intersection of County Road.
Dickens identified the driver, and during a search of the vehicle a revolver was found under the passenger seat where Gregory Earl Avent, 48, of Roanoke Rapids, was sitting.
Dickens charged Avent with possession of a firearm by a felon and carrying a concealed weapon. He was jailed on $10,000 secured bond, and assigned a July 2 court date.
Harris said Weldon Police Department Patrolman Tim Byers and canine officer C. Coley assisted with this traffic stop, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m.
The state Department of Corrections shows that Avent was released in September of 2012 after serving more than seven years after being sentenced as a habitual felon and for breaking and entering.
