An assault call in the parking lot of a Northampton County motel led to fugitive charges Tuesday for the woman who called deputies and the man who she charged assaulted her.

Northampton County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Super 8 motel at the intersection of Highway 46 and Interstate 95 in the Gaston area.

Cahill

Captain Chuck Hasty said Deputy Kenny Melton was the first to arrive and spoke with Melissa Marie Cahill, 35, of Woodbridge, Virginia.

Melton was speaking with Cahill when Jeffery Edwin Starling, 56, of Fanning Springs, Florida, came up.

Cahill told Melton that Starling, who she was traveling with, had assaulted her, although there no signs of it happening, Hasty said.

Starling

Melton continued his investigation and learned that Cahill and Starling were fugitives from other states. Cahill was wanted out of Virginia on drug charges and was given a $100,000 bond while awaiting extradition.

Starling was wanted out of Florida for vehicle theft, theft of a firearm and possession of a weapon by a felon. He was given a $300,000 bond and is awaiting extradition.

Lieutenant Jason Boone, Sergeant Antoine Johnson, officer Tommy Staton of the Gaston Police Department, officer Patrick Jacobs of the Garysburg Police Department and Seaboard Police Chief George Reed assisted Melton.
