Weldon police identified the victim of a fatal car crash Friday as a 63-year-old Roanoke Rapids man.

Chief Chris Davis said in an update this morning police are still investigating the cause of the crash which claimed the life of Leon Smith.

The crash occurred on Country Club Road as activity busses from Northampton County were taking junior varsity and varsity basketball players to a game against Weldon High School. That game was postponed.

Davis said in the update the students from the bus which was struck head-on — the one carrying the varsity team — were released from the hospital after being treated for minor injuries.

There will be further updates after more evidence has been gathered, Davis said.
