Isaac Matthew Nielsen, who had been scheduled for arraignment Tuesday, had the proceedings moved to the July 14 term of court, according to electronic documents filed in the United States Eastern District of North Carolina system.

The former Roanoke Rapids police officer faces two counts of distribution of child pornography.

The continuance approved by United States District Judge Louise Wood Flanagan came after a meeting between Nielsen and his attorney last week to discuss the matter at the Bladen County Jail.

The meeting, according to the motion filed by attorney Joseph E. Zeszotarski Jr., was “to discuss the universe of evidence in this case and the options available to the defendant to proceed. The defendant requests the opportunity for these discussions to continue and for more time to consider his course of action in light of the seriousness of the charges.”

A federal grand jury last December returned an indictment charging Nielsen with the two federal counts.

The United States Attorneys' Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina did not oppose the motion, Zeszotarski noted.
