An 83-year-old Fayetteville man died following a car crash this afternoon on Interstate 95.
Trooper J.C. Chaparro-Alcantara of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol charged the man’s 83-year-old wife with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to First Sergeant Lavern Bynum.
Benjimen Washington was a passenger in the vehicle his wife, Christina, was driving in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 when the crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the Gaston area.
The vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left, and Christina overcorrected. The vehicle then traveled across both northbound lanes and collided with an embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn several times.
Benjimen was transported to ECU North Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Bynum said Christina was in stable condition at ECU North. He said it would be up to the district attorney’s office to decide whether to proceed with the charges.
The investigation into the crash continues, Bynum said.
