Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 50-year-old Hollister man outside a local convenience store late Sunday night.

Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was identified as Joel Lynch.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately around 9:30 p.m. to a convenience store in the 37,000 block of Highway 561 following reports of gunfire.

Deputies discovered the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. First responders initiated life-saving measures, but the Lynch succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a large gathering of ATV riders was present at the convenience store when the shots were fired. Investigators are currently conducting interviews with numerous witnesses who were in the area.

No suspect information or motive has been released as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
