The Halifax County Health Department today added 34 new positive cases of COVID-19 and the 31st related death to its data this afternoon.

Health Director Bruce Robistow called today’s data an alarming trend as the number of positives reaches a sustained increase in the county. “This is an obviously alarming trend in the wrong direction,” he said. “We’ve had four deaths in one week and an extremely high number of new positives in the last 24 hours.”

Said Robistow: “This alarming trend should be a wakeup call to all of you to practice the Three Ws — wearing a face covering, frequent handwashing and waiting 6-feet apart. Please be reminded that county leadership has placed a focus on the compliance with mask-wearing in the public. Should you notice a violation I encourage all of you to reach out to law enforcement and report it.”

The 34 new positives bring the total cumulative number to 1,556 since testing began in March.

The latest death, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ ZIP code area database, was reported within the Scotland Neck area ZIP code and is the fourth to be reported from the area.

The breakdown of deaths is as follows: 17 within the Roanoke Rapids area ZIP code; four within the Scotland Neck area ZIP code; three within the Enfield area ZIP code; three within the Weldon area ZIP code; two within the Littleton area ZIP code; one within the Halifax area ZIP code; and one within the Hollister area ZIP code.
