The Roanoke Rapids Police Department is seeking information on the next of kin of Edward Lee Murphy, the man who is known locally for living under the Interstate 95 bridge at Becker Drive Extension.

Murphy, 55, was hospitalized around 7:30 this morning after a call came in from someone concerned about his well-being, Chief Chuck Hasty said.

Murphy is currently in critical condition due to an unknown medical condition and was expected to be transferred to another medical facility for further treatment.

Hasty said Murphy is known to have relatives in the High Point-Greensboro area and is also believed to have family in the Ahoksie area. He has no known relatives in the Roanoke Valley, Hasty said.

Hasty said Murphy typically sticks to himself. “People around the area try to take care of him.”
