The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

Officers responded this morning to the 100 block of Collins Avenue off Fourth Avenue after shots were fired into two homes. While people were inside, there were no injuries reported.

Police responded shortly after 12:15 this morning.

Martin said currently there is no suspect description and it’s not clear whether this was a drive-by style shooting or the suspect or suspects were on foot.

This morning shortly before 1:30 police responded to Gold Mine in Becker Village after receiving a report of a fight and someone being cut in the throat.

Officers learned two women began fighting at one of the fish tables and it filtered outside where the assault took place.

As officers gathered information they discovered a person involved in the original fight — Jada Ausby, 20, of Weldon — had outstanding warrants.

Master Officer D. Newsome attempted to place Ausby under arrest. Ausby became combative and pushed the officer away. He fled with a handcuff on one of his wrists.

Officers searched for Ausby but were not successful.

Ausby frequents the areas of the 300 blocks of Madison, Monroe, and Franklin streets, as well as the Weldon area.

He has warrants for hit and run leaving the scene of an accident and driving while license revoked.

For the charges associated with pushing the officer he faces counts of assault on a government official, damage to property which reflects damage to the officer’s uniform, larceny which reflects running away with the handcuffs, possession of stolen goods which is also related to the handcuffs, misuse of 911, and resist, delay, and obstruct.

The investigation continues into the fight and officers will be charging accordingly once all parties are identified. The victim with the cut was treated and is doing fine at this time.

The police department is investigating the theft of catalytic converters taken from parked vehicles and those on lots.

Martin said catalytic converters are one of the most sought after items to sell for scrap because they contain rhodium, palladium and platinum.

“It’s been going on for months now,” he said. “We’ve had thousands of dollars in damages done to the vehicles.”

Total damages thus far exceed $7,000 and potentially more.

A victim will know their catalytic converter has been stolen because the vehicle will sound much like a truck without an exhaust.

Martin said investigators believe the thefts are the work of different groups of people who usually strike late at night or in the early morning hours.
