Wesley Edward White in Halifax County is charged with catalytic converter thefts in Halifax County which occurred on February 2, February 26 and April 30, Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

In Halifax County 17 converters were stolen off working vehicles from the North Carolina State Department of Transportation yard, Halifax County Public Utilities and Halifax County Operations.

The crimes were committed after business hours and in the cover of darkness, Hall said.

Hall did not not have a dollar value on the converters stolen as the devices have varying prices depending on the vehicle.

“History shows in the past catalytic converters have had a value that one might want to have,” Hall said this morning.

Motor Trend Magazine reported in March that catalytic converters contain precious metals which are rapidly increasing in value — including platinum, palladium and rhodium which fetch high prices in the scrap market.

Hall said Detective R.M. Brown charged White Monday with multiple counts of larceny of motor vehicle parts, possession of stolen goods, first-degree trespassing, injury to real property and breaking and entering.

“Matt has been working really hard to combat this thing,” Hall said, referring to Brown.

The investigation included working with the sheriff’s offices of Vance, Bertie, Hertford, and Nash as well as the police departments of Greenville and Wilson and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

White has a July 22 court date in Halifax County, a May 21 court date in Hertford County and May 27 court dates in Vance and Nash.

There was no indication from the state court calendar he has been charged in Bertie County with catalytic converter theft but is scheduled to appear in district court there Thursday on felony drug charges and a charge of possession of a firearm by felon.

White received a $205,000 bond.
